Welcome Spring: Artwork by The Timothy School Students

February 18 – March 15, 2025
The Kitchen Gallery

Welcome Spring features recent projects created by students from the Timothy School.

Wayne Art Center is proud to collaborate with the Timothy School in Berwyn to provide studio art classes tailored to students who have autism and pervasive developmental disorder, a developmental disability that affects social interaction, behavior and communication. Beloved by students and faculty alike, the Timothy School provides an excellent outlet for students' creativity and expression.

The Timothy School is the oldest non-profit approved private school in Pennsylvania devoted exclusively to teaching students with autism.  For over 50 years, the Timothy School has worked to develop an understanding of autism that recognizes the strengths and uniqueness of children and the specialized methods needed to expand their educational opportunities.

Wayne Art Center thanks instructors Michelle Schamis and Shannon Wolsky for their work with these creative students!

Michelle Schamis is an artist, painter, sculptor, and teacher. She teaches workshops, classes, and outreach programs at the Wayne Art Center in Pennsylvania with an emphasis on art therapy and access for artists with special needs. Michelle graduated with a BFA in Painting from Temple University and received her MFA in Painting from the University of Arizona. Michelle states: “I meet the students where they are, they inspire me as an artist. It’s exciting to see what they create.”

Shannon holds a degree in Art Education from Millersville University and has been the instructor for Wayne Art Center’s program with The Timothy School for seven years.  About the program Shannon shares “Over the years, this program has become a staple for the students and teachers in the school. Many of our students love to paint. The step by step process is a helpful stepping stone for the students to learn sequence and outcome. We hope to keep creating and immersing ourselves in the arts for years to come!
