Mark Van Proyen is an artist and art critic based in Northern California. He is Associate Professor of Art History and Studio Practice at the San Francisco Art Institute and a Corresponding Editor for Art in America. He has contributed recent catalog essays for exhibitions at the San Jose Art Museum, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, the Circulo de Belles Artes in Madrid and the Anthony Mayor Gallery in London. His most recent book is Administrativism and its Discontents (State University of New York at Stony Brook, 2006). He is currently working on a comic novel set in the art world titled Theda's Island.
