Explore still life as a vehicle for understanding abstract ideas about composition, color and value, during this 2-day intensive workshop. Discover how the still life genre can be the perfect laboratory for experimenting with formal and technical painting fundamentals. Emphasis will be placed on ways objects can be arranged to maximize unexpected abstract relationships over their specific descriptive qualities. Students will be encouraged to further develop their own individual use of materials, mark-making and color palette throughout the painting process. The importance of balancing intuition and critical analysis will also be discussed. Demonstrations, slide presentations, individual feedback and group critiques will be given on both days.
Each student will arrange their own still life and paint directly from life. Instruction and personal attention will be given to help successfully arrange a still life prior to beginning the painting. It is strongly suggested that participants bring along some of their own objects, draperies, etc. for constructing a still life. This will help make the process more personally engaging and meaningful.
