Art For (and From) the Heart

October 3, 2017

There have been many charitable responses to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The Wayne Art Center in Pennsylvania is one organization that answered the call to respond, hosting a very successful fundraiser.

On Sunday, September 17, the Wayne Art Center hosted “Art from the Heart,” a two-hour public art sale designed to raise relief funds for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Among the artists who graciously contributed works were Center faculty members, students, and the global arts community. Approximately 150 works were donated ranging from $75 to $200.

Eighty percent of the artworks were purchased in the first hour, and the sale ultimately generated $14,000, which will be directed to All Hands Volunteers, a volunteer-powered disaster relief organization dedicated to rebuilding the lives of people impacted by natural disasters. Center Executive Director Nancy Campbell, concluded, “It was all worth it, as it brought everyone in the community at large together for an important cause. We have never experienced such an incredible response in so short a time. It just goes to show how people will step up to the plate when an important cause presents itself.”

Artist Valerie Craig was one of the faculty who helped organize the event. She said, “We are all humbled and amazed by the results of the fundraiser for Hurricane Harvey. It was a real collaboration and great teamwork.”
