Matthew Courtney was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Springfield, PA. After graduating from Philadelphia College of Art, he received his MFA from Kent State University, where he studied with Kurt Mangus. He began his teaching career at The Cleveland Institute of Art, and since returning to Philadelphia in 1995 has continually served as an adjunct instructor at many of city’s most prestigious art programs, including Tyler School of Art, University of Pennsylvania, and The University of the Arts. During this time, Courtney’s work has appeared in juried and invitational exhibitions in Philadelphia and as well as national and international and exhibitions.
