Watercolor: Floral & Landscape

Life Size Drawing

THIS ONE DAY WORKSHOP WILL FOCUS ON REPRESENTING THE LIFE FIGURE ON A LARGE SCALE. Students will experience a physicality that requires a looser style, a freedom of line and an emotive expression. An initial approach that emphasizes eye/hand coordination by observing geometric structure will lead to a sound organization of the picture plane. The timid draftsman will be guided through these steps and encouraged by the energetic atmosphere. The experienced artist will find the class a stimulating environment for practicing already acquired skills or for experimenting with new materials and techniques.

and edges, and how to simplify a scene for most impact. Includes

Exploring Mixed Media and Collage

Improvisational Silkscreen Printing with Fiber Reactive Dyes

LEARN HOW TO BUILD A RICH VISUAL VOCABULARY BY LAYERING COLOR, TEXTURE, PATTERN ON FABRIC WITH THE VERSATILE METHOD OF SILKSCREEN PRINTING. Wendy will demonstrate the process from start to finish. Jody will introduce students to the materials and techniques of Sgraffito Redware, including design choice, layout, and application.Whether you are interested in traditional decoration, or want to create something truly unique and "mod", this workshop will provide you with the information and materials to tackle surface design. Students should come prepared with several pieces of dry greenware either wheel thrown or hand-built. Please use nongrog, red earthenware clay. Materials list available on line or at registration.

THIS BEGINNER'S WORKSHOP WILL EXPLORE
THE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES OF
CREATING SILVER JEWELRY WITH PRECIOUS
METAL CLAY. It will introduce you to the
different types of PMC (lump, sheets, and paste)
in an easy step-by-step format. Topics covered
in the workshop include: creating forms, carving,
molding, texturing, firing, oxidizing and polishing.
Participants will explore these techniques
with an eye toward finding their own voice and
style through a choice of projects - pendants,
hollow forms, decorative beads, constructed
forms and earrings.
PMC IS A UNIQUE JEWELRY MAKING MATERIAL.
This user-friendly product is a malleable substance
that is composed of fine silver particles in an
organic binder. It can be sculpted and manipulated
like potter's clay. After firing in a kiln, all that is
left is your unique design in pure (.999) silver.
Landscape: Plein Air to Studio

THIS WORKSHOP WILL CONCENTRATE ON LEARNING TO SEE DIFFERENTLY, WHILE BUILDING A MORE SUCCESSFUL AND SOLID COMPOSITION. Students will explore their own personal reaction to the landscape while learning the use of design, value, color, light patterns and atmospheric perspective. Also covered will be paint application and how to vary techniques. Class will focus part of the time on skies and clouds. Demonstrations, critiques, discussion of materials and techniques, and personal attention will all be included. Class will be held indoors but if weather permits we may do some outdoor sketches. We will discuss how to do a larger painting from a smaller sketch. Student should bring outdoor sketches and/or photos to work from. Note: Students should have a good knowledge of how to handle the medium they will use.
The Allure of Shibori and Block Printing on Fabric

THIS WORKSHOP WILL COMBINE INSTRUCTION IN TWO EXCITING SURFACE DESIGN TECHNIQUES, SHIBORI AND BLOCK PRINTING. Begin by hand-dying Shibori fabric and then print on top. Leave with your own scarf, dyed and printed with your own design. Janell will bring all materials needed for the workshop.
Ceramic Glaze Composition

WHILE THE FOCUS OF THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE ON GLAZING AND FIRING FUNCTIONAL POTTERY AT CONE 6, THE PRINCIPLES ARE BROADLY APPLICABLE. John Hesselberth, co-author of the book Mastering Cone 6 Glazes and author of GlazeMaster software, will, through slides, discussion, and demonstrations, show you how to make glazes that are both durable-in-use and attractive.He will discuss and demonstrate use of the Seger unity formula as a tool, but promises it will be nearly painless to even the most chemistry-phobic potter. In addition topics such as good procedures for weighing and mixing glazes, glaze application techniques, in-studio testing of your glazes to assure suitability for use, and the critical importance of proper firing of your kiln for glaze development, will all be covered during the day. As time permits we'll take a look at some of your glazes and glaze problems.
